Medan Shashemene ACTS is a joint Kale Heywet Church and SIM strategy in Ethiopia.

Medan is an Amharic word for 'Saving the Generation' and ACTS is an acronym for AIDS Control, Treatment and Support.

In central Ethiopia the town of Shashemane is a hot spot for HIV. It has many of the factors to make HIV/AIDS explode in the region.

SIM with the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) are implementing a comprehensive HIV program with free HIV testing, home-based care, and awareness raising.

This project is also working in the local prison where almost 1000 inmates are receiving education on HIV, an anti-aids group has been formed, HIV testing is provided free, and HIV+ prisoners are receiving nutritional, emotional, and medical support.
Suggested gift amounts
  • $10 provides home based care to an HIV+ person for one month
  • $25 provides refresher training for five peer educators in a school on HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention (needed for 15 schools)
  • $50 purchases stationary and uniforms for two orphans or vulnerable children for a year
