In Burkina Faso, more than 150,000 people are blind, and 38,000 suffer from trachoma.
There are not enough ophthalmology centres nor ophthalmology specialists in the country. In the east there is only one ophthalmology centre located in Fada N'Gourma. In this area 45% of children under 10 years old suffer from trachoma, and very few will ever receive surgery.

SIM is building two ophthalmology centres, one in Mahadaga and the other in Piela. They will be equipped to perform cataract and trachoma surgeries and will treat general eye disorders. They will also provide information, education, and regular screenings as preventative measures, to the surrounding communities.
Suggested gift amounts
  • $25 provides training for one nurse in the diagnosis of common eye problems
  • $50 provides for the costs of one visit to a local primary school in order to screen students for eye problems
  • $100 provides cataract surgery for one person
  • $500 provides significant help towards the construction and equipping of new eye facilities in our rural centers of Mahadaga and Piela
