More than 38 million people across Africa currently face food shortages. The prices of food have risen beyond reach, while either drought or floods have dramatically cut food production. SIM Canada is working with farmers on improving their methods, forming cooperatives to access credit, and increasing their control over farming. This work is increasing and stabilizing food production, helping bring people from the edge of survival.

There are an estimated 33.2 million people living with HIV globally and 2.5 million new infections annually. Yet there is great progress being made to slow or halt the impact. New medical break-throughs and lower costs allow people with AIDS to receive often life saving treatment, and live healthier lives. SIM has partnered with CIDA to respond to community needs.

Communities in many parts of the world are vulnerable to famines and disasters. East Africa is currently experiencing severe famines, and other parts of the world are attempting to recover from significant floods or other natural disasters. SIM is working in these parts of the world providing emergency relief and rehabilitation. It is hoped that the early response and extended presence by SIM will reduce the impact and help recovery.

SIM Canada, is actively engaged in mobilizing people to mission through activities here and abroad. In Brazil, an office has been opened and is challenging the church to send missionaries overseas. SIM merge compassion with skills training to enable individuals to develop wholistically, while equipping local churches to become active agents of transformation in their communities.
SIM ministers to people in the areas of health care, emergency relief and community development alongside the local church. Our evangelistic and church-planting efforts go hand in hand with ministering to human need. As in Jesus' ministry, God's love is both taught (proclaimation) and demonstrated (incarnation). |
