The reconstruction of Haiti has now begun as efforts move from emergency relief to rehabilitation. The devastation of the capital, and its impact on the people of Port-au-Prince, is hard to comprehend.
SIM Canada, through its partnership with International Child Care (ICC), continues to support both immediate and long term assistance. ICC’s hospital has become a field hospital for a medical response team from Germany and ICC’s nurses – treating fractures, infections, lacerations, and so many more injuries.
Meanwhile, the Haitian Ministry of Health’s TB Office has moved into Grace Children’s Hospital, as their buildings were destroyed. ICC has partnered directly with the Government to manage the National TB Program’s flow of TB drugs to eight of ten departments in the country. Ensuring patients have continued access to TB medication is critical in order to avoid drug resistance, which has deadly results.
Aid continues to be stuck at the airport. ICC is using its partnership with ICC Dominican Republic to ship the necessary medical supplies, food, and materials across the boarder. A shipping container is currently being coordinated in Canada for transporting antibiotics, anesthetics, bandages, gloves, gowns, and other supplies.
Please continue to pray for the ICC Haiti staff as they work through their own losses of family and friends. Pray for wisdom in making important strategic decisions.
You can support ICC’s work through SIM by donating to the Haiti Earthquake fund. Every donation made up to February 12th will be matched 1:1 by the Canadian Government. |
