Staying Behind

By Lucia Eberle (Project Manager of Dorcas Widows Project NIGER)

As I brought 4 leaders of Dorcas Widows project to their bush taxi on this harmattan day in Niamey. I had joy. I had peace. I was so proud.

This time I was not embarking on this trip.

I didn’t suggest this mission.

It came from their heart.

It came from their initiative.

It was all them.

A few weeks prior, Mantou had a visit from a widow from a village a couple of hours away from Niamey coming to plead for help for many widows in her region.

She had heard about Dorcas Widows project.  She wanted to meet the white lady. She wanted to get help financially. As Mantou shared with me her heart desire to go visit them to see and evaluate the situation, I encouraged her to go. Dorcas Widows project would send her.

She had heard from this widow their extreme poverty. So she started telling all the widows to bring clothes. She shared at church and women she knew around her the need. I also helped by getting clothes among expats here in Niamey.

We got so much. What a blessing to see how God touched many hearts to give. Mantou also got 3 other leaders from the group to go with her.  And they told me not to go. For security reasons in that region and because they had wanted so much to see the white lady.

I agreed with their counsel. As I prayed with these dear friends that morning, I had such a JOY.

Isn’t it what we are supposed to do? Prepare, equip, encourage, send, bless, trust … others in the ministry God is making us part of. Today I had so much joy “to stay behind” … because I was sending 4 widows that I call my friends and partners in this ministry.

Ephesians 4:12:  to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.
