To go and make disciples. To serve Christ where He is least known. It has been our great honour to be a part of God’s global mission from past to present …and onward.
We Started With Courage and Conviction
The beginnings were tough. Walter Gowans and Thomas Kent succumbed to malaria upon arrival in Africa, while Rowland Bingham would contract malaria twice, but would recover from his illnesses. While he returned home, Bingham assembled a team who in 1902, would build a new base in Nigeria. That began the work of SIM in earnest.
Bingham is credited as a trailblazer in the work of missions. He led with skill, grace, ingenuity, and faith as they encountered a world that was rapidly speeding up: New technology, wars, political strife, and changing dynamics within the Church.
Quoting the Apostle Peter, Bingham urged us in his book Seven Sevens of a Year and Jubilee to “speed” up our calling. We need to give more diligence, urgency, and care to the good work of sharing the Gospel. We think he would be even more amazed to see our world today, one that is sped up beyond what he could have imagined.
The Great Commission remains the same, but the field is different. It is no longer “from here to there.” It is everywhere to everywhere — including our own home. Canadian believers wanting to fulfill their calling and passions find themselves in an unique opportunity that requires global workers who do a good job well, with the highest level of integrity and trust.
We know that development is an expression of discipleship. Projects in sectors such as health care, food security, farming and sustainability, anti-human trafficking, education, business development and more help transform communities and hearts for Christ.
When you become a global worker with SIM Canada, you’ll find that like Dr. Bingham, the work is just getting started. It’s serving people who need the Lord, who need their needs met, and who are seeking meaning and purpose.
We’re proud of our legacy. We also recognize that as our founders grew and developed, we also are growing and developing. Our mission remains the same and we continue in the good work that Dr. Bingham started. Join us on the adventure of serving where Christ is least known.
