Miriam was raised in Senegal West Africa where her parents were missionaries for 21 years. She trained as a nurse in Ontario and worked at a small hospital in Nova Scotia for several years before joining SIM in 2012. She learned of SIM's medical ministries when she attended the SIM missionary conference in Malagash, NS. She currently works with a clinic serving marginalized communities in Benin West Africa. Aside from dispensing medical treatments, they do home visits and increase awareness of health conditions through education and counseling in the community. They help meet the basic needs of orphans and vulnerable women and children. There is a lot of stigma surrounding some medical conditions in Benin which can significantly impact relationships. Their goal is to decrease these stigmas and keep families together and caring for one another.
