After establishing a medical practice in White Rock, BC, Karen felt a divine calling to reach out to those who had not yet heard of God's love in their own language. Inspired by Romans 10:14, Karen's heart was moved by the need for people to have the Bible in their mother tongue. Karen serves at Rio da Huila Medical Center, a rural hospital that serves as a strategic outreach to the Ovamuila/Nyaneka communities. The Nyaneka people now have access to the New Testament, the Jesus Film in Nyaneka, and various Bible study books. Yet, the mission continues as many more need to hear about Jesus. Healthcare opens doors for missionaries and local believers to bring the gospel to hard-to-reach places. The dedicated workers of the Rio da Huila Church and its daughter churches bring patients from distant, animistic communities to receive medical treatment in a loving, prayerful Christian environment. Through community and hospital healthcare, dentistry, sustainable agriculture, nutrition assistance, and maternal-infant preventive care programs, lives are being transformed. Many have come to know Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Dr. Karen, alongside a team of 32 Angolans, works in general medicine, staff and leadership development, discipleship, and evangelism.
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" Romans 10:14 (NIV)
